Competitive Analysis

In the competitive analysis, I researched 3 vocabulary learning apps in the market (Quizlet, AnkiApp, and Flash Cards), and assessed the positive and negative aspects of each app. These assessments are based on my personal experience as a user and as a designer.

Here is a research summary for each of the 3 apps:

Research Goals

In order to decide on a direction to go with for the design of the app, I interviewed 5 participants and asked them a handful of questions about their daily routine and their experience with learning new vocabulary and their interaction with vocabulary–learning apps.

These are the questions I asked each of the participants:

  • Tell me about your daily routines and responsibilities. What does a typical week look like for you?

  • In the last year, how many times have you actively studied vocabulary?

  • What is your purpose for learning new vocabulary?

  • When you last tried to learn new words, what did you use to do so and what worked well & what did not work well?

  • From your experience, what are the greatest challenges with learning new vocabulary?

  • Is there something that could have made it easier for you?

Here are their responses:

Afterwards, I grouped their sharings into 3 categories: Doing, Feeling, and Thinking.

The purpose is this to gain an understanding of the behaviors, needs, and goals of the persona.

Personas

Problem Statement: Rae needs a quick way to learn and understand vocabulary that pertains to her life and workplace so that she can communicate better with others. She will know this to be true when she spends more time speaking with her patients and less time on her phone for terminology.

Hypothesis Statement: We believe that by creating an engaging vocabulary app with audible and visual features, mainly focused on medical terminology, we will be able to achieve greater memorization retention of words.

Userflows

With the user stories I wrote, I created 2 userflows and 2 task analyses. This would help to visualize how the user would navigate through the app to achieve the task.

Userflow 1: Adding New Words

Entry Point: Open App

Success Criteria: User learned/reviewed new words with 100% learning accuracy

  1. User starts with opening the app and swipes through the splash screen to get to the Log in/Sign Up screen.

  2. The user who signs up for an account will be directed to the Select Language(s) screen followed by the Select Proficiencies screen, and then the Home Page, or the user who logs in to their account will be directed to the Home Page.

  3. Now there is the option to add new words and from there, the user will see a screen to enter the new word/phrase.

  4. The next screen will show an option to insert definitions/media for the new word.

  5. The user then hits save to Save to Vocab Set and then he screen shows an option to Save to Existing Vocab Set or to New Set, and the process will be completed with Return to Home Page or being directed to an Existing Vocab Set and from there, the User can decide to Add New Words again.

Userflow 2: Learning/Reviewing New Words

Entry Point: Open App

Success Criteria: User learned/reviewed new words with 100% learning accuracy

  1. User will open the app, swipe through the splash screen, and automatically enter the Home Page if saved Login information.

  2. The user may select User’s Vocab Set or Search for Other Users’ Sets to learn/review new words.

  3. If the user chooses their own set, they can Add New Words or select a specific Vocab Set. If the user decides to search for sets created by other users, this will take them to vocab sets that may exist.

  4. The user is then taken to a screen to Choose Word/Phrase to study and then 3 options appear on the next screen: Definition, Select Language to Translate, and Context.

  5. If the user chose Definition, then the next screen allows for Learning/Reviewing the Flashcard with a Review Game or Quiz Review. Upon completion, the screen will display Review Complete and take the user to Review Again to Learn/Review Flashcard or return to the Home Page.

Wireframing & Prototyping

Referencing the userflows, here are the wireframes I created. I then implemented these sketches into a low-fidelity prototype.

Usability Testing

Overall Plan

  • Scope: Testing the usability and functionality of Memorize App, a mobile app for learning, memorizing, and reviewing vocabulary.

  • Schedule: I will be conducting usability tests in person on January 23, 2022.
  • Sessions: There will be a total of three sessions lasting no longer than 10–15 minutes each.
  • Equipment: I will conduct interactive tests using medium-fidelity prototypes via Marvel, and I will note observations with pen & paper.
  • Metrics: Jakob Nielsen’s Error Severity Rating Scale.

Tasks

  1. Sign up for an account.

  2. Create your first flashcard and save it to a new set.

  3. Review vocabulary from the first set you made.

  4. Share your first set.

Below is the usability test report.

New Design

In response to the results from the usability study and Jakob Nielsen’s Error Severity Rating Scale, I designed some new screens for Memorize to improve the user experience.
